Artist's
Statement:
It is
important for me that you know why I paint. I believe art is
healing. Nine years ago, my daughter developed a sudden, incurable,
and uncontrollable seizure disorder. The years of medication and
brain trauma have left my graceful, talented, sixteen-year-old
unable to function above a first grade level. I have grieved, I have
been angry, but now I paint. I look for the oldest, rattiest pieces
I can find. I really prefer items that have been thrown away. And I
receive enormous satisfaction by making them attractive and useful
again. I suppose it is the tremendous powerlessness I have
experienced with Abby’s illness that drives me. But, oddly enough, I
get very attached to my work. I
like to know they have had former lives, been discarded, and now are
receiving another chance to beautify your home.
All of my pieces are unique, original, and hand-painted. I do not
use new materials and I do not mass-produce anything. Each item is
restored and meant to be useful. They are carefully sanded, primed,
and base-coated before I apply the decorative accents. Since I enjoy
lots of detail, a small table or chair can average over 25 hours.
You will often find many imperfections on my art. As long as I get a
piece to be structurally sound, I like to leave the bumps and nicks
that have naturally occurred over time. I used to be a perfectionist
… now I am an artist.
So, I hope you enjoy browsing through my web page. I know art is
very subjective and not everyone will appreciate my style. But, if
perchance you do, please let me know. I would love to customize a
piece just for you.
